Located on the South end of the strip beside the Luxor, the
Excalibur is one of the older hotels on The Las Vegas strip, and the
poker room appears a little aged as well, but don’t
let that stop you from trying them out - they have quite a few nice
features.
Tables and Stakes
There are around twenty tables and there have
always been at least two or three tables running every time I have
been there, and I have been there at just about every hour. In the
evenings and on weekends there are plenty of full tables at all
levels. The last time I was there, they had planned to start
offering low buy in tournaments, but had not started yet.
The Excalibur offers some of the softest games you will find
anywhere. This is the best poker room available for new players
and/or low limit players in Las Vegas. The 1 – 3 game is filled with
players who have no idea how to play correctly and even the no limit
games have their fair share of poor players.
There are also a few
unique features that new players will be sure to enjoy. They have a
prize wheel in the poker room that awards players between $20 and
$200 with a spin at any limit table other than 1 – 3 for any hand of
four-of-a-kind or better or if they have pocket Aces beaten. Be
warned though, you will suffer many bad beats here because many
players will chase hands all the way to the river, correct pot odds
or not.
Limit holdem is offered in spread limit at 1 – 3, 2 – 6 and 2 – 10.
No limit holdem is offered with a maximum $200 buy in. Though it
doesn’t run very often, they also offer 7 Card Stud in 1 – 5 spread
limit. You can’t find many places any more that offer spread limit,
but the games at the Excalibur run very well.
Staff
The dealers are competent and friendly for the most part, falling
into the middle of the road for Las Vegas. Actually, the last time I
was there, every dealer was very pleasant except one, who was grumpy
but otherwise very efficient. They are far from the worst, but also
far from the best. The cocktail waitresses are not the best looking
either but they were fast, friendly and accurate while I was there.
If you have never played poker in a casino poker room, like
spread limit holdem or are a player who just enjoys low limit games,
then you owe it to yourself to make time to play at the Excalibur on
your next trip to Las Vegas.
