General Review of the Tournament Series - 2005:
The
World Championship of Online Poker consists of 15 separate
events at
PokerStars.com over the course of 15 days. For 2005, the events
begin on September 4, and the total guaranteed prize money for all
the events is over $8 million. Poker Stars is billing this as the
world's premier online poker tournament, and I'm pretty sure that
isn't just hyperbole. It seems like this is the closest thing the
online world has to a World Series of Poker of its own, other than
qualifying for the actual land-based WSOP on one of the major poker
sites.
Like the
WSOP, the World Championship of Online Poker consists of
different events with different games and buy-ins. This year they
have no-limit, pot-limit, and limit Texas holdem events, pot-limit
Omaha and limit Omaha/8 events, and stud high and stud/8 events.
Some of the new events this year include the No-Limit Holdem Triple
Shootout, the No-Limit Holdem Match Play event, and the Pot-Limit
Shorthanded event. (The Unknown Webmaster himself has won a
qualifier into the pot-limit short-handed event, and you can be sure
I'll update this site if I win.)
Satellite tournaments for these events began on July 17 and are
still going on. You can qualify through multiplayer tournaments or
SnG's, whichever you prefer. You can also buy your way into the
events with your Pokerstars frequent player points, which Poker
Stars calls "FPP" for short.
The World Championship of Online Poker even offers its own
bracelet, which is pictured below:
