If you’re looking for Steve Brecher, you should start at Reno, Nevada and head towards Lake Tahoe. About a third of the way there, stop, look around and shout loudly. Steve is a software developer, poker player, hiker, cross-country skier, actor, and more. So many of those titles fit well into the profile of a poker player… the analytical mind of a software developer, the stamina of a hiker, patience of a cross country skier, not to mention the skills of an actor… all rolled up into one heck of a poker player. Reading his online journal leads me to believe that his interests go far beyond poker, but for this article, we’ll focus on his poker career.

Steve Brecher made a final table appearance at the October 2005 United States Poker Championship at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. His third-place finish marked the fourth final-table appearance of his career, and his best overall showing in a major tournament to that date. His performance earned him a total of $218,250, brining his total winnings for the 2005 season to nearly $280,000. Prior to his United States Poker Championship performance, Brecher's best result came in the 2004 Bellagio Five-Star World Poker Classic/WPT Championship tournament where he finished sixth and earned $232,862.
Steve Brecher plays Texas Hold’em in the World Poker Tour events along with a few other $5,000+ buy-in tournaments. He has finished in the money six times in World Poker Tour events and made it to one final table. There he finished in sixth place in the 2004 World Poker Tour Championship. He has played five Professional Poker Tour tournaments where he finished eleventh once and ninth two times. Also, he placed third in the 2005 United States Poker Championship. This is all since December 2003 when TV began to drive the live and online poker boom.
Before that, in the early 90’s, as Steve was retiring from a career in computer software, he played local tournaments and in Limit Hold’em games. Then in the mid ‘90’s he began to play just a few major tournaments, finishing eighth in the 1999 No-Limit Hold’em tournament at the World Series of Poker. He first dabbled in poker as a young man playing No-Limit Ace-to-Five Lowball with a Joker in the deck. He’d sometimes play lowball, but mostly played limit poker. His old-school experience no doubt pays off as his poker career develops.
You can find some more photos of Steve and a free download of some Hold’em software that you might find interesting at www.brecware.com . You’ll get a pretty good taste of the man’s sense of humor, and you’ll also find a way to contact him directly should you be moved to do so.
Brecher is a friend of Full Tilt Poker, so if you want to see him playing online, that’s where he’ll be.
