Richard Brodie

Poker Player Richard Brodie - This guy wrote Microsoft Word, after dropping out of Harvard. How brilliant is that?

Richard Brodie

Richard Brodie’s poker career started where any good poker player should, at the beginning. In the summer of 2003, he saw his friend Andy Bloch make two World Poker Tour final tables on TV and became intrigued. He began playing $10 tournaments online, learning from his results and analyzing his game.

When his careful tracking of his results showed without a doubt that he had the skills to be a winning player, he was ready to move on to bigger ponds. The difference between Brodie and other mere mortals is that this whole process took just five weeks and 123 online tournaments.

Here are an important couple of facts that I left out. Richard Brodie is the primary author of Microsoft Word, and he dropped out of Harvard to become the 77th employee of Microsoft. He is also the author of at least two best selling self-help books, including Getting Past Ok and Virus of the Mind: The New Science of Meme.

A meme is a unit of cultural information which one mind transmits to another through actions or discussion. These bits of cultural programming exist in themselves and are self-propagating units. For example, a mood or a feeling of superiority can spread and grow within a society.

The meme itself is not the good or bad moral item, rather the effect the meme has on the individual’s behavior could be good or bad. The main point of the study of meme, though is that a strong meme will replicate and spread regardless of it’s effect on the society. Brodie is currently working on a novel, which he says includes the concept. Being non-fiction, he has higher hopes of that work being read and assimilated into understanding.

A gifted writer, philosopher, programmer, business man and analytical mind, he is also a student of human nature and clearly has what it takes to be a poker player with the big dogs.

His third live tournament ever, he finished second in the $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em event a the Festa al Lago… knocking out world champion Scotty Nguyen in the process. In Brodie’s words, he was hooked! Since then, he’s finished in the money in five World Poker Tour events, one in the 2004 World Series of Poker and Three televised final tables in season two of Ultimate Poker Challenge.

He currently resides in Seattle, Washington and is married to Heather Brodie who is a Success Coach. A glimpse into the persona of Richard Brodie can be found on his web site. www.memecentral.com/rbrodie Here he has personal photos posted, links to his books, and a little background.

One of his comments is that he has recently purchased a recumbent exercise bike so he can exercise and work on his poker game at the same time. Another place for Richard Brodie enthusiasts to visit is his blog of Lion’s Tales www.brodietech.com/liontales/blog where he chronicles his experiences in the poker tournament world.

You will find him playing online at Full Tilt Poker where he is listed as a part of Team Full Tilt in the friends section.
