Greg Mueller
- by Oliver Gaywood
Greg “Full Blown Tilt” Mueller is best known for his career as a professional hockey player. After his retirement from the sport in 1999, the Canadian giant – who measures up to a beastly 6’ 5” – found that he missed the competitive edge in his life so turned to poker to fill the void.
During his hockey days he practised the game regularly on the team bus on the long away trips although at the time he thought of it as nothing more than a hobby.
He is primarily a Limit Hold ‘em player but like most who play that game he has ventured into No Limit and has done remarkably well in both.
He made his first tournament appearance of note in 2002 when he entered two No Limit events at the Heavenly Hold ‘em competition. He cashed in both and made the final table of one, finishing third.
The following year he made his first appearance at the World Series of Poker in what turned out to be his only cash finish of 2003. 2004 was even quieter with no prize money coming Mueller’s way.
2005 saw his career back on track when he cashed in the World Poker Tour and four times at the WSOP, including one final table appearance. He received his first six figure pay out in March 2006 playing No Limit Hold ‘em in the Reno Hilton.
To date he has cashed eight times in the WSOP but is yet to win a bracelet. He came incredibly close in 2007 in the No Limit Hold 'em World Championship Mixed Hold 'em where he was beaten only by Steve Billirakis as he collected the second place prize of $330,000. This latest win of his effectively doubles his tournament earnings which now stands slightly over $600,000.
Mueller is easy to spot at the table – his height and broad shoulder make him stand out – and he likes to make himself the centre of attention with his bubbly character and great sense of humour.
As an ex-pro athlete his fitness levels are highly important to him and when he is not travelling playing on the circuit he plays sport and works out at his home in Vancouver, British Columbia. He believes that this helps him maintain stamina and concentration at the table which can be vital as games run on late into the night. He also enjoys going back to watch the Canucks when they have hockey games at home. Most of his family is based in Vancouver and he particularly enjoys catching up with his young niece.
The Canadian superstar has been signed up by Full Tilt Poker to join their team and is often seen sporting their logo. He also plays online at their website under the name GregFBTMueller.
