David Grey - Full Tilt Poker

David Grey

   - by Oliver Gaywood

David Grey is considered to be one of the world’s top cash players and despite his dull sounding name, he is a player who adds a splash of colour to the poker arena.

Growing up, Grey had no intentions to become a poker player but fate dealt him a different hand. Gambling was always in his nature but his forte was horses rather than cards. Living on New York’s Long Island he spent hours at the race track and for a while he earned his wage as a horse handicapper. Between races he would relax with his work colleagues and play cards, soon becoming an ace at 7 Card Stud.

In the mid 80s, Grey longed for a change of scenario and headed off to the glitzy world of Las Vegas and moved to the nearby Henderson, Nevada. With the abundance card games, poker soon became Grey’s life and he quickly forgot about his life in horses. With so many tables to experiment with, he branched away from his favourite game and learned as many poker variants as possible.

Grey participates in tournaments from time to time but is predominantly a cash game player. With Las Vegas and its bountiful array of casinos he is never short of a challenge and rarely travels the world to play in tournaments with so much available on his doorstep.

Luckily for him, the World Series of Poker is based in Las Vegas so he can easily enter this without missing the luxuries of home. His career record illustrates his talent, displaying several final table finishes including two first places.

He has also played in the Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament and came second to Daniel Negreanu on TV’s Poker After Dark.

His first WSOP bracelet came in 1999 with success in the 7 Card Stud event. He added to his in 2005 when he finished first in the No Limit Deuce to Seven Lowball, coming from behind to leave John Hennigan feeling blue. These two victories provided a significant contribution to Grey’s tournaments earnings, $1,100,000 from 21 cash finishes by the end of 2006.

When he’s not playing poker, Grey can often be found going back to his previous passions and watching or playing sports. His current favourite is golf and he spends many of his days on the green before going to the casino to work his magic.

Grey remains living in Nevada where he shares his time, his house and his heart with his loving wife and playing cards in the famous Bellagio casino. He feels he has got to the stage where he doesn’t need to play poker every night but prefers to pick and choose his games to suit his mood.
