Alan Boston is a professional sports better and poker player who has broadened his career by using his outspokenness and offbeat sense of humor to win over fans. He has homes in Las Vegas and Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Boston is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and has been earning a living gambling since he was 24.

He was a featured subject of the book “The Odds” by Chad Millman in 2001 and has also been seen on the ESPN program “Outside the Lines”. Though, if you caught that show on ESPN, Boston would probably like you to know that he felt he was grossly misrepresented as an emotional bettor in a gold plated mansion in Vegas. Not so, he says. “If I got upset every time I lost, I wouldn’t be doing this for the past 20 years.” It’s his intellectual approach to betting that translates well into the live poker world.
This year he has become infamous for his participation in a college basketball sports talk radio promotion called Beat Boston. Boston made his picks each week in competition with others to see who could pick with the best results. By all accounts, Alan is an honest guy who holds strong opinions and is forthcoming with those opinions.
Bloggers describe him as a funny and entertaining guy. Could be that funny to one person is annoying to another. By his own words, he acknowledges that he has aggravated some folks, but he doesn’t feel his goal is to aggravate, rather it is to educate and share his knowledge.
Unfortunately, and possibly coincidently, Boston was attacked from behind on his way to the radio station one evening in January of 2006. By his own account, he was not robbed, and he does not know the motive of the attack. It is possible that the attack was random. It is also possible that the attack was personal or linked in some way to the reaction of a radio listener and college basketball fan.
Alan says on his Full Tilt poker bio that this year is likely his last year for betting on college ball, so whatever the reason for the attack, there seems to be some serious consequences. Luckily Boston escaped without more serious physical injury and seems to have made a recovery.
In the poker world, Boston is less well known, but known non-the-less. He says the pros know him for his 7-Card Stud game and that he’s a tough out in any tournament. With ten years of World Series of Poker play, he has many top 20 finishes under his belt. The best result was a second-place finish in the $2,500 7-Card Stud tourney. He also has two thirds, and one fourth in 7-Card Stud.
Beyond 7-Card Stud, Boston also has had final table appearances in Limit Omaha, Omaha 8 or Better and Half Stud/Half Hold’em tournaments.
