Harrahs Announces World Series of Poker Schedule for 2006

The WSOP will be held again at the Rio Suites in Las Vegas, and in 2006, the event will be scheduled to begin on June 25 and run until August 10. Last year the World Series of Poker generated over $106 million in prize money, and the expect to do at least that well again in 2006 if not better.

TV Poker Ratings Falling

World Poker Tour, World Series of Poker, Ultimate Poker Challenge, and Heads Up Poker  are all losing mindshare apparently, since their ratings are falling. But GSN still has plans to launch a new poker tv series called High Stakes Poker.

AOL and Harrahs Teaming Up to Offer Free Poker Tournaments and Games

They're not sure whether or not you're going to be able to win a WSOP seat for 2006 or 2007 yet, but it looks like you'll be able to win a seat using a free-money poker game from AOL that Harrah's is co-branding with AOL. I think any entry by AOL or Yahoo into the online poker space is a good thing for the industry, if nothing else for the legitimacy it adds to it, perceived or not.

World Poker Tour Video Game Now Available

I'm not entirely sure I understand the fascination with X-box and Playstation poker games like this new World Poker Tour game, or the recent World Series of Poker game for the X-box, but I guess there's a big market for it. I suppose teenagers can get ready for real poker with these games.

Ashton Kucher Buys a Poker Lesson from Annie Duke

Celebs are continuing to try to get their names attached to poker in some way. As if Ashton didn't get enough press marrying Demi Moore, who's a good 15 years his senior. I guess he bought the lesson for charity, so it's a good thing. Annie Duke is one of the celeb poker players associated with Ultimate Bet poker, which is one of my favorite poker rooms, so I'm cool with that too.

Bluff Magazine is the Exclusive Sponsor for Black Tie CEO Poker Tournament

The CEO poker tournament will be taking place in the spring of 2006. The tournament will be made up of CEO's and decision makers, presumably for large companies, who will be playing no limit holdem. The winner will receive the title "Poker Chairman".

Harrahs Moves the National Heads-Up Championship to Caesars

The National Heads Up Poker Championship is a 64 person event where players play heads-up and are eliminated one by one. I watched part of it one television with my dad this last year. The 2006 tournament will take place March 3-5 at Caesars this next year, and 1st prize will be $500,000.

Interview with Poker Babe Shirley Rosario

She's not only pretty, but smart too. Be sure to read her answer to the question, "What does a woman bring to the poker table that a man doesn't?" in that interview. Laughed out loud at that one today.

Party Poker Divorces Its Skins

This is possibly the biggest news in the online poker world right now. Party Poker suffered from some downtime last weekend, and when they came back up, the "skins" of Party Poker were on their own, separate network, and Party had added blackjack and some other sidebets to their offerings.

This has been the subject of much discussion on poker player forums and poker affiliate forums. Most of the controversy has arisen because a lot of the Party Poker skins made rake rebates and rakeback plans available to players in violation of Party's agreements with these affiliates. Now the players are mad, because money's coming out of their pocket, and some affiliates are mad, especially if they're receiving MGR from the poker skin that used to be able to access the 70,000 players at Party every night.

Cameron Diaz Hooked On Poker Because of Ellen Degeneres

There were at least 5 versions of this article online today, but I chose to post a link to the one with the hottest pic of Cameron Diaz. Wow.

Big Poker Winners Getting Accounts Frozen

Fascinating article about a customer, a high stakes poker player, in fact, who was winning too much on average per hand that he played, and the poker site froze his funds for 3 weeks. The article concludes with several suggestions and ideas for poker sites to take better care of their customers.

Courtney Friel is Excited to be the New World Poker Tour Spokesmodel

This is a piece from Cardplayer magazine, where Courtney is interviewed about her new assignment with the World Poker Tour. The article includes 3 stunning photos of Courtney Friel, and judging from the pics, she is a striking beauty indeed, and possibly a very worthy successor to Shana Hiatt.

Top Ten Gambling Sites

This is a great article from iGaming News which lists the top ten gambling sites for different countries. Some of the stuff I found interesting: PokerRoom.com was the #5 gambling site for USA traffic. This is possibly because they hold a #1 ranking for the word poker in Google.

Apparently Party Poker is big just about everywhere, but I didn't realize they had such a big presence on the UK web, but they're #9 there. I attribute this to their recent IPO though. When I think of UK players, I usually think of Interpoker.

The stats from the article quoted above are from a company called Hitwise.

Pacific Poker, 888.com, Cassava Goes Public

Seems like going public is the trendy thing to do in the gambling world these days. Cassava, the company which owns Pacific Poker and 888.com, also known as Casino-on-net, went public about a week ago. Looks like their market cap is around $300 million, which I converted in my head from a week-old article which listed the price in pounds, so don't hold me to that, and look up the price for yourself if you're really interested in the market cap there.

Unknown Poker Adds a No Limit Texas Holdem Sit and Go Strategy Section
While I'm the first person to admit that I'm not the greatest poker player on the internet, I have done pretty well at SnG tournaments at Party Poker, Ultimate Bet, Full Tilt Poker, and Pokerstars. I'm sharing the strategies I've learned and used to do well in this article.

Benefit Online PokerTournament for Kristen Richter
You can read the full details in the article I've posted, but let me just say here that this is a worthy cause, and a lot of people would appreciate your support in this tournament. Kristen and Bernie are two of the nicest people I know, and anything we can do to support them now is a good thing indeed.

Annie Duke to be Featured in New Xbox Poker Game, World Championship Poker 2
I'm pretty sure the tv sitcom that was going to be loosely based on Annie Duke didn't get picked up by anyone, which is too bad, because I think Janeane Garofalo is not only enormously talented but super-hot too, but Annie can take comfort in being featured in the next big poker game for the X-box. The game is going to be published by Crave Entertainment.

Honest Portrait of Stu Ungar
My favorite poker player, in terms of pure drama, is Stu Ungar, whose life story is a tragedy in the literary sense of the word. (i.e. He had tragic flaws.) This article is about Ungar's new biography One of a Kind: The Rise and Fall of Stuey 'The Kid' Ungar, the World's Greatest Poker Player. I haven't read the book, but after reading this article, I definitely want to read it.

Free Poker Tournaments and Their Questionable Legality
This Denver Post article talks about the bars and pool halls which are holding free poker tournaments for prizes there in Colorado. These free tourneys are becoming a big boon to a lot of businesses there, but the attorney general and law enforcement officials there question the legality of it. Such draconian laws regarding something so harmless as poker shouldn't surprise me anymore, but strangely enough, they always leave me bewildered and sad.

Doyle Brunson at the High Rollers Steak Dinner
72 year old poker legend Doyle Brunson reminisced about a time when being a professional poker player was more of a stigma than a reason for fame at a New York event. He was joined by David Williams and Phill Hellmuth among others. Seeing stuff like this makes me really glad that poker has become so mainstream. I saw poker get called "the new golf" the other day, which made a lot more sense to me than the "bingo is the next poker" statement that webmasters keep hearing.
