Online Poker News7/30/2005 Poker Boot Camps article at Marketwatch. This article generally goes into the rising popularity of poker seminars and boot camps. Interesting reading, especially the sidebar on the new 'poker economy'. Sets of poker chips have risen by a factor of ten over the last 3 years. A poker club in Riverside is robbed by 4 men at gunpoint. I live in almost constant fear of something like this happening, especially since I live in a place where all the poker clubs are 'underground'. As a result I spend a lot of time playing online in the relative safety of my own home. Thank God no one was hurt. Online poker to reach $2.4 billion in 2005. Worldwide online poker revenue jumped to more than $1 billion in 2004, up from $365 million in 2003 and is expected to hit $2.4 billion 2005, according to Christiansen Capital Advisors. And Marcos Breton doesn't like online poker. 7/27/2005 Pacific Poker Running Free $1.1 Million Tournament. In August, Pacific Poker, which is a site I've never played at, which is why it's not found on this site, since I can't review a site at which I haven't played, is holding a big free tournament with a $1 million grand prize. The tournament is going to pay out over 500 winners, but the prizes drop significantly in value after the first prize. 2 through 10 gets $10,000 plus a vacation. The only catch is that a player has to win a seat at the tourney. It's free, but you have to qualify for your seat. Ultimate Bet News. It's looking like the rumors of an Ultimate Bet IPO are no longer just rumors. They're anticipating an initial market cap of between £145 million and £200 million. Ultimate Bet has been in business for 5 years and is the 7th largest poker site online. 7/26/2005 Victorias Secret Google Bomb. This hasn't really been found terribly newsworthy, so there's no link, but basically Victoria's Secret launched a viral marketing campaign for a softcore, "pink panty poker party" website, which they redirected back to Victorias Secrets main site after it ranked #1 in Google for the phrase "party poker". Thousands of bloggers with different reasons for being interested in "pink panty poker" linked to the site, some of them advertising related, some adult-interest related, and even a couple poker related blogs gave them a link. Over the last couple of days, their site has dropped to something like #8 for the phrase "party poker", which is still ranking it a lot more relevant than it really is. I wonder if people searching for "party poker" buy a lot of lingerie? Absolute Poker Affiliate Program Moving In-House. Poker webmasters received an email yesterday from the fine folks at Income Access advising them that as of August 1, the Absolute Poker affiliate program will be moving in-house. According to the email, Absolute Poker will still be using the Income Access back end, but the actual management of the program will be handled by Absolute. 7/25/2005 - Ultimate Bet to go public. This is more of a rumor than an actual confirmed news story, but from what I hear, the company that owns Ultimate Bet poker, Excapsa, is going to be taking the company public. If Party Gaming's performance is any judge, then this might be something to watch very carefully indeed. I'll post news articles about this item as I find them. I have added a page her on this site regarding any and all news about the Ultimate Bet poker IPO. This page was last updated on January 5, 2006. |
