How to Play - Caribbean Stud Poker

Caribbean Stud

The Ante

Each hand of Caribbean Stud Poker begins with the player placing a minimum bet called an "ante" on the ANTE circle on the table. This minimum bet varies from casino to casino. A common minimum bet is $5 or $10.

The Progressive Bet

Before each hand, you must also decide whether to play or pass on the progressive. Should you decide to play the progressive, you must place a $1 wager in the progressive slot.

By making the progressive bet you qualify for the special progressive payouts. These payouts apply to the following hands:

  • Flush
  • Full House
  • Four of a Kind
  • Straight Flush
  • Royal Flush

The payout on each hand varies from casino to casino, but they almost always pay 100% of the progressive amount on a royal flush. And most pay 10% of the progressive amount for a straight flush.

The Hand

When the hand begins, both you and the dealer will receive five cards.

One of the five dealer’s cards is be shown.

You then evaluate your hand and decide between one of two actions:

  • Fold- If you fold, your game ends and you forfeit your ante.
  • Bet- If you bet, you place a wager on the "bet" area of the table layout. The bet is exactly twice the ante amount.

The Decision

If you've decided to play the hand by placing a "bet" wager, the remaining 4 cards in the dealer's hands are show, and the hands are evaluated.

The first step in this process is deciding whether or not the dealer's hand qualifies. To qualify, the dealer must have at least an ace-king or better. If the dealer doesn't qualify, the hand ends, and the ante is paid out at even money and the bet is returned. There are no other payouts if the dealer doesn't qualify.

If the dealer qualifies, your hand is compared with the dealer's hand to see who wins. If you win, you receive a payout based on how good your hand is. This payout structure varies from casino to casino, but a typical payout structure is presented in the section for Caribbean Stud poker rules.
