Goal Poker is Closed
The room has ceased operatons. It was originally part of the Network of Absolute Poker Rooms. I suggest you visit the main room on that network instead.
Initial Review of Goal Poker - May 9th, 2006
Having been a player at Absolute Poker for quite some time, I never thought I would see them branch out into a network of rooms (a la pokerroom.com, the old IGM party clones, the uBet skins, prima poker, etc.). But, it has happened, and the first room I've seen using the Absolute software is Goal Poker.
Goal Poker is a room aimed squarely at the European Soccer fan market, at least for now, as they offer " fantastic footie prizes" to their players.
If you're interested in any of the features of the software or numbers for the player traffic, you can review my words on Absolute Poker. What Goal Poker brings to the table is a different way to present poker to different people. The light-hearted way in which the website is written conveys a different flavor of the game.
For instance, one of their upcoming tournaments lists flying to South Africa to spend a few minutes swimming around with a Great White Shark as one of the prizes. They hasten to add that "you'll be in a cage for the shark's protection". That's a different approach to things.
Since they have joined into the Absolute Poker network, I don't have any fears about depositing or playing. Absolute is very proud of what they've accomplished as a stand alone room, and I can't see them taking on another operator into their gaming systems unless they were highly qualified.
The rooms share the same tables, so I can find the same table selection and game selection. The thing is, Absolute already does such a great job of dealing with customers (with their generous bonus program and their new VIP system) that it makes me wonder why folks would sign up with GoalPoker instead.
Well, one perfectly good reason is that Absolute only allows one "change of character" so to speak. you can change your player avatar once. If you decide to play at the tables through Goal Poker, you can do a complete makeover to yourself. Become unrecognizable, and leave any notes other players may have on you worthless.
Bonuses
With a 200% sign up bonus up to $200 (Use pass code GP200), you can still reap some very nice bonus rewards. In fact, a 200% welcome bonus is worth quite a bit more than a 20% or 25% redeposit bonus.
Besides the basic bonus monies the rooms offers, they have several "prize packages" as well. They include lots of "football" (Americans: read soccer) based getaways and collectibles. They do, however, include Fussball tables for your house, branded with GoalPoker.com as one of the Spot Prizes available. And, I fancy myself a better-than-average Fooseballer from days gone by. That sounds like a fun prize to me.
Overall
GoalPoker should provide a solid playing experience. Playing on the new Absolute Network will pretty much guarantee that. The element of fun, with the working-class English twist is what may make this room stand apart from what is becoming a crowded space in the world of online poker.
