Initial Review of Goal Poker - September 27th, 2006
Well, just when you think you've seen everything, Come Out Poker comes along and reminds us that poker players do truly come in all shapes, sizes, and inclinations. I first spotted this poker room, which is focused at the gay/lesbian/bi/transgener community at PokerPages.com. Since then, I've heard about it wherever I go.
Marketing aside, the first thing that's different about the room is that it comes in two flavors. There is a PC veersion of the room you can download, but there is also a Mac version that you can download. This makes them only the second room, after FullTilt, that I've seen offering a downloadable Mac compatible version of the room.
Instead of choosing between a series of freeplay and real money play tables, there is a third section of tables available at Come Out Poker. There are "Poker School" tables, which may or may not be related to pokerschoolonline.com. If I had to guess, I'd say they were, but I'm certainly not sure of it.
There are a variety of promotions and special tournaments at the room. The first deposit bonus is unusually generous, at 100% up to $600. But to follow that is a series of freerolls, guaranteed prize pools, and league events.
The poker leagues and poker school tables certainly set this room apart. The leagues seem to be leaderboards for play at the tables, so in essence they work as a comp system rewarding players who spend more time at the tables playing. The heads up league, for example, awards players one point for every dollar won and one point for each finishing position. At the end of the month, there is a $1,000 Prizepool split between 18 places with a first prize of $250.
Come Out Poker offers a few extra games that aren't online poker room standards. For example, they deal Razz along with 7 Stud hi/lo. This lets them offer games of HORSE. There are mixed game tournaments, and the website touts the addition of their own game, titled Come Out Holdem. In Come Out Hold'em straights don't count.
While it's an interesting idea, I didn't see it listed in the tournament lobby anywhere though.
One big qustion with any of the newer or smaller rooms is player traffic. I know that Come Out Poker has a buzz about it, but is everyone just talking, or are they playing too? Well, there are players at the tables. Right now, there are over 2,300 players in the room, and it's early afternoon.
